im ready for the floor…

the core of the band hot chip, alexis taylor and joe goddard, began songwriting while studying music together at the south london elliot school. after playing around with different elements of sounds and infectious textures and producing them into a few home recorded demo eps, the label astralwerks and dfa signed them immediately and in 2004, the birth of their debut coming on strong was released. challenged by the idea of progressing, hot chip shared critical acclaim and much success with their second album the warning yet, still maintained a focused sentimental direction.

hot chip’s third album *made in the dark* features a mixture of their catchy electropop, colorfully reflective beats and surprisingly synthesized pop ballads. the single ready for the floor was rumored to originally be created for kylie minogue to sing but unfortunately she never even heard it. the band dismissed this as a misquotation and said that if kylie was to be given one of their songs to sing, this would be it. however, after experiencing duffy’s cover and performance live recently for radio one — a comforting, addicting and soft, feminine approach has completely taken over.

I made these cookies for a local cookie contest, and while they may not have made it into the top three, they did win me the Best Decorated Cookie prize. This is a great Christmas cookie that I put a little twist on to make it seem more like a summertime treat. Find the recipe and more at my blog.

Drawing an imaginary line,
daring you to feel reprehensible this time
Prickly feeling around this neck,
social integration is a one way trek

So divided by this wall of silence
open the door
with such a doublespeak mouth,
let it all out

Please be a man today,
but all this flexing
can become quite vexing,
such a pointless charade

Maybe the alternative
is to become some woman,
conniving and striving to be
humiliating, mortifying;
endlessly contradictory,
a whirlwind of bitterness and fury

What was this about prerogatives?
are not you the company that you keep?
If that is the ultimate case,
I'm siding with all the freaks...

Hello! I used to post here awhile ago and then I was without the internet for some months, and now I am back! I was just wondering how many Ani shows everyone has been to, and if you can pick, which one was your all time favorite show? And also if you've ever followed her on tour?
I'm asking because a friend of mine, and I went and followed Ani a few weeks ago to Vienna, VA, Washington D.C., Philly, PA, and Richmond, VA. We had both seen her before, many times, but this was the first time we were actually following her from city to city. It was the best experience of my life and is only just the beginning. We're already planning to maybe catch her in Michigan, Missouri and/or Arkansas this fall.

Anyway, so far I have seen her 10 times (my goal is 20+ and yes yes, I'm slightly obsessed. Nothing compares to seeing her live) and I'd say my favorite show is tied between Brooklyn, NY at Prospect Park in 2007 and the Philadelphia show a couple weeks ago at the Mann Center. The crowd was so upbeat and into it the whole night long. She seemed so freakin' happy, and her whole band seemed happy and everyone was just smiling, dancing, laughing and having the best time. Nothing beats that.

And, and maybe you'll find some people who were at the same show/shows you were at, as well!

Hi,

a maybe rather dumb question, but I'm curious about that - it's really bothering me: How exactly (example/details) are you studying grammar?
I don't only want to hear what kind of books you're using, but rather HOW you use them? Do you make flashcards for grammar points, are you just studying and repeating some sentences for each grammar point? Are you doing a lot of exercises?

And something else: When I was in a huge Japanese bookstore last week I discovered 2 different textbooks for intermediate level.
Back then I couldn't decide which one to take and decided to first do some research.
Now it seems that only one of those books is available online: An integrated approach to intermediate Japanese
I can't remember the exact title of the other book, but it was pretty much the same, something like "introduction ... intermediate Japanese"

That's all, thanks a lot in advance :)

Japanese copyright

Hey everyone, I have a question concerning Japanese copyright laws...

In short, from what I understood, the US has a fair-use policy that allows us to duplicate images for the sake of review or commentary on an artist's work as long as the image stays small. I have not been able to find out if something like this exists in Japan?

What I plan to do is make an independent fashion magazine and include some images of clothing made by popular Japanese lines. I think in the US you're allowed to do this without first obtaining permission, but I was wondering if this is the case in Japan?

And I'm also not sure which country's laws should be followed in this situation, since I will be publishing this in the US.

conventions

As Comic-Con rolls around, I'm getting a bunch of questions from people about which conventions I'm attending this year. Unfortunately, the list is small.
I can't make it to SDCC because it's too expensive, I've sworn off riding in airplanes forever, I can't get the time off work, and for now, I always spend waaaaaaaay more money than I make, so it's hard to justify it as a business trip.
The one I am going to this year is Gaylaxicon, a sci-fi/fantasy/comics/anime/gaming/geek fest for LGBT people and supporters. It's in Washington DC from October 10-13. I'm really looking forward to it.

Next year I'm going to be going to a lot more conventions. (Anyone know of any reeeeally good ones?)
The ones I want to go to are:
MOCCA, Stumptown, SDCC, Toronto CC, Penguicon... and some more. Like I said, give me suggestions!
A really nifty thing for you to do is, if there's a convention you go to, and you have influences within it, get them to pay for me to come! (*nudge nudge*)

Application Weds

"Art in the Park" is a multi-layered event. In addition to the juried art show, the festival features live musical entertainment, restaurant-quality food, wine and beer vendors, and a "Kids' Area" with extensive programming, including interactive art projects.
The much-anticipated festival will be held Sunday, Sept. 21, from 11:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., rain or shine, on Raritan Avenue in Highland Park.

Interested artists should log onto www.mainstreethp.org to print an application form.
Applications, slides and fees must be submitted by Aug. 8.

Don't forget to send your samples to Craftin Outlaws if you'd like to be included in the goodie bags.

They are putting together canvas tote goodie bags to be handed out to 100 people in attendance.  If you’d to take part in this year’s Craftin' Outlaw Goodie Bag, the deadline for your items/samples need to arrive is Monday, August 4th.  The maximum number of items/samples would be 100, but if you'd like to submit less than that amount that would be fine.  Examples of items/samples-soap, pendant, magnet, hair accessory, stationery example, etc.  We'd like to discourage it from becoming just a bag full of fliers and cards.

If you'd like to participate in this offering, please contact them at craftinoutlaws@gmail.com with any additional questions.

Theme: My Twist on Indian Chicken (RED!)

I had actually planned on making the traditional tandoori chicken (but baking it rather than grilling it). However, the grocery store failed me and I decided instead to alter the recipe I had. Read more about that at my food blog if you're interested. There's also for how I did the rice and potatoes there.

Anyway, the chicken isn't overwhelmingly red, but even moreso in person it's definately tinted red. And though it wasn't the tandoori I wanted, it was yummy nonetheless, with the perfect amount of spiceyness!

It's a tradition for my mum and I to, during wild rose season, pick wild rose petals (all rose petals are edible, but we prefer the wild ones), candy them, and decorate a cake. The result is lovely, because as the cake sits in the fridge the flavour of the roses seeps into it and gets stronger every day.
